Sh*t L*sts: Album Purchase Style (aka I Heart Duffy Style)

June 2, 2008 · 6 Comments

Hey guys, hope you all had as good a weekend as I did.  I think I was able to press that hard-to-reach reset button in that hard-to-locate place inside my soul…I think the Glenfiddich 18 year-old Scotch and good friends might’ve helped me along in that quest.  And you can’t underestimate the power of a good hamburger and hot dog.

Anyway, I bought three albums this weekend, two before I got on the train to Connecticut and one, as soon as I got back, after becoming newly-infatuated with a performer I saw on Later with Jools Holland whilst I was there.  That performer is Duffy and I think she’s absolutely fantastic!  Check out this YouTube of her song “Rockferry”.  That’s all I’ll say about her now so I don’t overstep my bounds on praise, but if you get a chance to check out her most recent performance on Later with Jools Holland, do it, but be prepared to have a new crush!

Duffy

So, let’s do a Sh*t L*st and talk about the last 5 albums that you’ve actually purchased, since I can talk about the other ones I got this weekend and find out what ya’ll are listening to.  Click on through to see my list and to post your own…

1. Okay, you already know about this one and I recommend it to you all…Duffy’s Rockferry.

2. One of the pre-train ride albums I downloaded via Amazon mp3 album downloads is Mudcrutch.  If you don’t know, Mudcrutch is Tom Petty’s pre-Heartbreakers band which a couple Heartbreakers were actually in, but the other guys kinda got the shaft while they watched Tom rise to stardom.  They’re happy cats now, because Tom decided to put ‘em back together to share the wealth (30 some years later) and they’ve made an excellent album that I also would fully recommend to ya’s!

3. The other pre-train ride album download is R.E.M.’s Monster.  I had just recently been thinking fondly about it and how much I wore out the cassette in the mid-90’s.  A great ROCK album.  No jangly “Losing My Religion” mandolin weepiness, just a great eclectic R.E.M. album that really rocks!

4. Then there’s the Third World Ultimate Collection.  I think the start of every summer finds me spinning a lot more reggae records, and this one is a fantastic collection from one of reggae’s great bands.  Try Jah Love!

5. And then there’s Keith Richards’ Main Offender.  I love this album and Keef’s voice.  He’s also a big fan of reggae and even does a reggae number on the album!

And here’s a few vinyl pieces I picked up at a stoop sale recently in Ft. Greene… Greenslade’s Spyglass Guest, LL Cool J’s BAD, Todd Rundgren’s A Wizard A True Star, Hawkwind’s Hall of the Mountain Grill, Humble Pie’s Eat It.

So what have you purchased lately?  List ‘em below, yo…

As with most thirty-somethings who liked hip hop, triphop, indie, etc… back in the day (I’m assuming) of course I just bought the new Portishead. So far, I’m enjoying it.

I also just borrowed a Stryper CD from my bro-in-law in Cali. Not surprisingly, that’s been hard to get through.

    Other albums :

Gnarls Barkley, The Odd Couple – I’m not too picky these days, but I’m having a good time listening to it.

Dead Moon, Echoes of the Past – Okay, I’m not sure where I was when this came out but I’m sorry I missed this boat. Cool stuff, I need to get more of it.

Sorry, only 4 but I had to comment on LL’s BAD. What a great album – LL was a force back then. I had tickets to see him on that tour but got grounded and had to miss it. I still remember hearing “I need love” for the first time and was kinda shocked at hearing a slow rap song. It really was one of, if not THE first slow rap song as much as I can remember. IMO it really doesn’t get the credit it deserves for being a genre changing song (for better or for worse).

    Late!

Wow, a pretty wild mix there, Robby…but you’re always cool like that. I don’t know Dead Moon, need I check out?

Yeah, I played the hell outta that LL album back in the day (before I clocked some dough…)! Kanday was the jam… and Go Cut Creator Go!

I’ve only heard this one album from Dead Moon but based on some of the music you include here, I think it would be right up your alley. Check this out: http://www.subpop.com/artists/dead_moon

I’m not surprised about the duffy hits, she’s massive in the UK at the moment apparently. Greenslade -saw them back in the glorious seventies – they visited Derby several times- and witheir penchant for Roger Dean designed album sleeves, I was always gonna buy their stuff – Bedside Manners are Extra was my particular favourite. Humble Pie’s Eat it was an album that, as a callow, ignorant and uneducated 15 year-old, passed me by, but over the years I’ve grown to love it. “Black Coffee” in particular, is a tour de force, with a James Brown -sized helping of soul from the diminutive, and undeniably white Stevie Marriott -what a legend – what a song. Check out this wonderful Whistle Test performance:
