Let’s see….the band lived three flights up in an aging apartment building on the Lower East Side. They were then known as Clarence and the Clowns. The building’s surly super, Big Phil, lived in the basement apartment. One day, the band was dragging their gear from their van into Dino’s Bar and Grill. The drummer, Stan, points out a man digging through the garbage cans next to Dino’s, flinging banana peels and egg shells, and mumbling obscenities to himself. The man turns around and to the band’s surprise, it was none but their super, Big Phil! The bass player exclaimed, “Supertramp!” Thus history was made.
