Sh*t L*sts: Live Album Style

I’ve been finding myself more and more drawn to live albums these days, it seems. I’ve always been more into the well-executed studio stuff, at least most of my life. I think it’s just harder to pull off the perfect live album: so many of them are just blah. But I’ve found myself going back more and more, to a number of liveboys, in a way that I’ve never done before. If my studio to live album listening ratio 5 years ago was 10:1, I would have to calculate that different in the Winter of 2008 to more like 6 or 7:1. If a live album fell in a forest, and no one was there to hear it…

Anyway, after the jump below, I’m gonna serve you with 5 of my current live faves, followed by 2 classic ones that I’ve loved for at least over 10 years. Why don’t you do the same?

Ummm, how classic is this cover, btw? (and one of my favorite live albums from middle school days!)…

Live After Death

All right, here are mine:

1. Thin Lizzy - Live and Dangerous

2. Love - Live In England (released last year as part of the ‘Blue Thumb Recordings’)

3. James Brown - Live at the Apollo, Vol.1

4. Colosseum - Live

5. Electric Prunes - Stockholm ‘67

And a couple lifelong favorites, not including Maiden (although it goes without saying):

1. Grateful Dead - Europe ‘72

2. Kiss - Alive

There are so many good ones…what are yours?

  • Guys, I’m sorry but I had to repost this, writing it all out again because something was wrong with the formatting in the original, to the extent that it was making the rest of the blog look weird. Here’s a recap of the comments that you made:

Kev said: Live and Dangerous was a classic, but so much of it was overdubbed later, but, the end product sounded great. Was it ethical though?…..who cares!

I’d like to give a shout to BOC’s “On your feet or on your knees”(mentioned in these hallowed portals by me a while back) and Jethro Tull’s fabulous “Bursting out” complete with Ian Anderson’s eccentric British loonery! all this and the Dambusters theme as well! And…proving their was more to glitter and glam than stack heels and sequins- Slade Alive. “Get down and Get with it” ac/dc before ac/dc anyone?

p.s. Kiss Alive…hell, yeah, just for the gatefold sleeve alone. Looking at that as a teenager and thinking “I want to do this”

p.p.s. Newms, I’ve posted another Tubeless Hearts song on http://www.myspace.com/kevinandrewmoore
as a tribute to one of my guitar heroes who has been diagnosed with cancer. Mel Galley, of Trapeze, Whitesnake and Phenomena, was a massive influence on us, none more so than on the track I’ve posted today, called “The Pimp”. We loved his funk laden, tasty guitar lines interweaving killer melodies, and tried to emulate them here. Check it out!
